View Full Version : Monty's off his grub

Hi all, finally back from our hols in France fully rested and now jolly cold!!

As you may remember, Monty (7 months) went to a local kennel whilst we were away. He has always been fed Arden Grange puppy food (kibble), and whilst he isn't a huge eater, he has always cleaned his bowl, however, whilst in kennels he decided he no longer wanted to eat it. As this was is first experience of being away from home I suspect he went off his food for a little while.

The Kennel was obviously worried that he wasn't eating enough, he is still on two meals a day, so changed him over to adult Arden Grange to see if they could tempt him - he apparently happily eat this. They sent me home with a small sample bag of AG adult - only enough for a day. I offered him his usual AG puppy when we got home with a little bit of the adult food mixed in and he picked out the few pieces of adult kibble and left the rest, he also turned his nose up completely at dinner time last night. This morning he was obviously hungry and was bouncing around like a loon waiting for his breakfast (AG puppy) but as soon as I put the bowl down he turned his nose up at it again and walked away.

I am now not sure what to do. I have a sack 3/4 full of AG puppy left over and I'm somewhat concerned that at just 7 months he is old enough to be having only adult food. I need to pop into my local animal food store to weigh him, he was 10kg before he went into the kennels and there isn't much "spare" flesh on him. Any suggestions?

When my girls were on Burns, they told me that puppy food could be changed to Adult as soon as their baby teeth were gone so I changed them at around 6 months. I know that some people on COL have done it a lot sooner xx

Sorry, meant to add that they also said that the adult version was almost the same ingredients, just that the puppy one was smaller pieces...

I know many people put their pups up to adult food at 6 months and at 10k I would say he's big enough for that. Pity about the part bag though.

If in doubt call the vet and ask advice.

hi sandra..welcome back..:044:

firstly..monty is still a puppy at 7 months..so if possible do try and stick with the food for a few more months..
do you just feed him it dry ?
if so..have you thought about adding..alittle meat, chicken or tinned tuna..
cockers can be quite fussy i have two of my 9 who are very fussy and one of them does not eat dried kibble what so ever...

Terri I used to add some wet JWB puppy food to his AG kibble, but he started turning his nose up at this so we went for dry puppy AG. I have some pouches left in the cupboard so I can try adding some of this to see if it makes it more appealing and I've always got tuna in the cupboard so that's something else to try. OK just a quick update following your suggestions yesterday. I added some JWB puppy meat to Monty's dinner/breakfast and he bounced into his crate to eat, first time since before his hols:046: - not sure how long it will last, but at least he finished his grub, poor little chap must have been hungry! Fingers crossed we can keep him going on his puppy AG for a few more months yet.

ah, good to hear he polished it off :059: That age is notorious for them turning fussy as well....Fargo did it at 6 months ^^

i'm sure things will go abck to normal and he will soon get back into the swing of things again..

Thanks everyone, not that I'm a paranoid mum or anything!!

I'm sure you're right Terri, Monty hasn't been left with anyone other than my parents for half a day and then M&D came here so he was in his usual surroundings, so to suddenly go into kennels was probably a big shock for him - and a huge guilt trip for me!! I'm sure he would have been fine if they had persevered with the AG puppy, but I guess they were concerned that he wasn't eating and wanted to get something into him - at least they stuck to the AG brand I suppose!
