When Ruby & Ted meet other dogs off lead in the park they bounce around in delight, they run and chase the dogs, and the dogs chase them back, they sniff butts, rub noses and generally look happy but they drive us absolutley nuts with their incessant yappy/excited barking! It's not a "grrr bog off I don't like you" bark - it's more of a " OMG, OMG, OMG!!!!I'm just sooooo excited to meet you and I can't contain myself" sort of bark. (Well at least that's how we interpret it anyway!) It's mostly Ruby that starts this racket and then Ted decides to join in. We try our best to calm them down by making them come back to us and lie down but as soon as they get back up again and resume playing with the other dogs they start this annoying high pitched barking again. (Arrgghhh!!!) Nobody elses dogs seem to make such a racket so we feel quite embarrassed about our noisy pair. Does anyone understand what this barking is all about and how we should respond to it?

They're excited and having fun, IMO if they arent causing trouble id ignore it, I would imagine they will calm down eventually. How do you react to them when they start it, do you try to get them to stop it??:007:

Marty does this as he chases a bird when hes running etc, sounds like an exciting sort of ' yay yay yay' sort of thing. I dont mind that so much i'm having major troubles with him barking at night, he barks to go out so he can see the birds etc, and if he doesnt want to sleep etc. It's driving me insane at the moment, i usually have to bring him up to my room where he settles until about 5ish then wants to go in the garden, the problem is he barks in the garden and then wont come in

Pha! nearly 8 years on and they're still mad as a box of frogs when they're out and about and other animals are involved! Today's chorus was triggered by the entrance of a new four legged friend - a lovely calm 9 yr old black lab who was so laid back and lovely I was so envious of his chilled out behaviour! We stopped and had a bit of a chat with his owner whilst the pooches all got to know eachother but when R&T started yip-yapping a bit too loudly we called them back to us and got them to sit, then lie down, then when they were quiet they got a tiny treat and a fluffle...but no sooner had they had the treat they were up and at it again! So we decided to hook them up and return home. :073:

x ahh yes! Ruby chases those pesky pigeons out of our garden too and if that evil squirrel ever has the ordasity to trot along our fence then Ruby & Ted have absolute conniptions! Whenever they start barking in the garden I call them in and they usually respond straight away but if they ignore me and insit on continuing to make a racket I go out on the patio with my stern face on and show them the "naughty" lead, which they know means business! but if they still ignore me I stomp up to them and put the lead on and frog march them back into the house and shut them in their room and ignore them for a while. (If only they came with a volume switch eh!):045:

Looks like we're gonna have to try and record soundbites of our noisy hounds and start another competition thread! :045: Oh yeh Theresa! Ruby could wake the dead when we step out the front door to go walkies too! I think the main reason why me & Ardel get all despondent at times is because most of the miserable g^ts around here seem to dislike dogs, and make us feel like they should only be seen and definitely not heard! :065:

Generally if he doesnt come back in i go out and put him back in the kitchen. However he hides behind the bushes as though its a game. I really need to be more strict i think x

We have 9 houses in our street/village (one and the same believe me)...No 1 has no dog, No 2 has an Andrex puppie, No 3 had a huge golden lab, No 4 has a erm I think shes a Collie but I could be wrong on that one abd then there is us at no 5 with 2 cockers, no 6,7,8 have no dogs and 9 has a cocker....6 dogs between 9 houses so we are very dog friendly round my bit....No 7 is up for let so bring your two up here and we could have 8 dogs between 9 houses :D
